How the conversion works

The US legal definition ties the cup to the gallon: 1 US cup = 236.5882365 ml exactly (half a US pint). The conversion is a single multiplication or division:

  • cups → ml: multiply by 236.588 — 2 cups × 236.588 = 473.2 ml
  • ml → cups: divide by 236.588 — 500 ml ÷ 236.588 = 2.11 cups

One caveat before you pour: not every "cup" is the same size.

Cup typeMilliliters
US cup (this tool, American recipes)236.6 ml
Metric cup (Australia, NZ, many jugs)250 ml
Old UK cup (vintage British recipes)284 ml

American recipe sites and cookbooks mean the US cup — and so does this converter. If your measuring jug shows a 250 ml "cup" line, it's the metric cup, about 5.7% larger.

How to use it

  1. Type a value into either field — cups or milliliters.
  2. The other side converts live; results are trimmed to one decimal.
  3. Tap a common value chip (¼, ½, ¾, 1, 1½, 2, 4 cups) to start from a typical recipe amount.
  4. Copy puts the full conversion (e.g. 1 cup = 236.6 ml) on your clipboard.

When you need this

Baking an American recipe with a metric kitchen is the classic case: the recipe says "¾ cup of milk", your jug only shows milliliters, and your hands are covered in flour. Keep this page open and convert as you go.

Remember that cups measure volume, not weight — for flour, sugar and butter, weight is more reliable, so pair this with the OZ to Grams Converter when a recipe gives ounces. For liquid ounces on drink and cosmetics labels there's the ML to OZ Converter, and for larger quantities the Pints to Liters Converter works exactly the same way.

Private by design

The conversion runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded or tracked, and there's no sign-up. For volume, weight, temperature and more in one place, try the general Unit Converter, or browse more free utilities on the all tools page.
