What is a lorem ipsum generator?

A lorem ipsum generator creates blocks of meaningless placeholder text so you can see how a design looks with real-feeling content before the final copy is written. Instead of typing "text text text" or pasting a paragraph from somewhere else, you click a button and get clean, neutral filler that fills the space naturally.

The phrase lorem ipsum comes from a scrambled passage of Latin that has been used in the printing and typesetting industry since the 1500s. The text is intentionally unreadable — that is the whole point. When the words mean nothing, your eye stops trying to read them and instead judges the layout, line length, font choice, spacing and hierarchy. That makes it the standard way to mock up websites, slides, brochures, app screens and wireframes.

Because this generator runs entirely in your browser, the text is produced instantly and privately. Nothing is sent to a server, so you can use it as often as you like, even with no connection.

How to use it

  1. Set the amount in the number field — how many units of text you want.
  2. Choose a unit: Paragraphs, Sentences or Words.
  3. Leave "Start with 'Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…'" ticked to begin with the classic opening, or untick it for a neutral start.
  4. The text appears in the output box immediately and updates whenever you change an option.
  5. Press Regenerate for a fresh block of text, or Copy to drop the result straight onto your clipboard.

The footer shows a live word and character count, so you can match a specific length target when you are filling a fixed text field or a column; for measuring copy you already have, the word & character counter gives the same live tally on any text you paste.

Paragraphs, sentences or words — which to pick?

The right unit depends on what you are filling:

  • Paragraphs are best for body content: blog layouts, article templates, long-form pages and anywhere you need flowing blocks with natural breaks.
  • Sentences suit captions, card descriptions, list items, tooltips and short blurbs where a paragraph would be too much.
  • Words are ideal for headings, buttons, navigation labels, badges and tight UI slots where you only need to fill a few characters.

A common workflow is to generate a few paragraphs for the main content and then drop down to words or sentences to fill the smaller elements around it; once the real copy lands, a case converter quickly normalises headings and labels to the casing you mocked up. Switching units does not lose your place — the amount field stays the same so you can experiment freely.

Why designers still use placeholder text

It can be tempting to paste in the real copy as soon as it exists, but placeholder text earns its keep at the early stages of a project:

  • It removes bias. Real headlines and marketing copy pull attention to the message; lorem ipsum keeps everyone focused on the design itself.
  • It reveals layout problems. Filler text of a realistic length quickly exposes awkward line breaks, cramped columns, overflowing buttons and uneven spacing.
  • It speeds up mock-ups. You can fill an entire template in seconds without waiting on a copywriter, then swap in the real words later.
  • It is consistent. Generated text always uses the same neutral vocabulary, so two designers reviewing the same layout see comparable content.

Tips for better placeholder text

  • Match the real length. If the final paragraph will be three lines, generate roughly that much — placeholder that is far too long or short hides real layout issues.
  • Test the extremes too. Generate an unusually long block and a very short one to check how your design handles overflow and empty states.
  • Use words for the small stuff. A heading filled with a full sentence rarely reflects reality; a few words is closer to a real title.
  • Remember to replace it. Placeholder text has an embarrassing habit of shipping to production — do a final search for "lorem" before you publish.
  • Keep accents in mind. Lorem ipsum has no accented characters, so if your real content will, test those separately to confirm your fonts support them.

Because the generator is free, needs no account and builds everything on your own device, it is a fast, private helper to keep in a tab whenever you are designing, prototyping or testing a layout.
