How the conversion works

The avoirdupois ounce — the ounce used for food, body weight and postage — is defined as exactly 28.349523125 grams, so the conversion is a single multiplication or division:

  • oz → grams: multiply by 28.3495 — 8 oz × 28.3495 = 226.8 g
  • grams → oz: divide by 28.3495 — 100 g ÷ 28.3495 = 3.53 oz

The factor is a definition, not an approximation: since 1959, one pound has been fixed at exactly 453.59237 grams, and an ounce is one sixteenth of that. So 16 oz = 1 lb = 453.59 g, and any rounding in results comes only from trimming decimals for readability.

One thing to watch: this is the weight ounce, not the fluid ounce. Fluid ounces measure volume, and a fluid ounce of oil weighs less than a fluid ounce of honey — for liquids, use the ML to OZ Converter.

How to use it

  1. Type a value into either field — ounces or grams.
  2. The other side converts live; results are trimmed to two decimals.
  3. Tap a common value chip (1, 2, 4, 8, 12, 16, 32 oz) to start from a typical recipe amount.
  4. Copy puts the full conversion (e.g. 8 oz = 226.8 g) on your clipboard.

When you need this

The classic case is baking from a US recipe with a metric kitchen scale: American recipes weigh flour, butter, chocolate and sugar in ounces, while scales in most of the world display grams. Converting the ounce amounts once at the start makes the rest of the recipe painless — and grams are actually more precise for baking, where small differences matter.

Beyond the kitchen, ounces show up on postage scales, coffee bags, protein powder scoops and product packaging. For larger weights, the KG to LBS Converter covers kilograms and pounds, the Stone to KG Converter handles UK-style body weight, and the Cups to ML Converter translates US volume measures for the same recipes.

Private by design

The conversion runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded or tracked, and there's no sign-up. For other unit pairs, the general Unit Converter covers length, volume, temperature and more, or browse more free utilities on the all tools page.
