How the conversion works

One foot is exactly 0.3048 meters, and area scales with the square of length — so one square foot is exactly 0.3048 × 0.3048 = 0.09290304 square meters:

• sq ft → m²: multiply by 0.09290304 — 1,000 sq ft × 0.09290304 = 92.903 m²
• m² → sq ft: divide by 0.09290304 — 100 m² ÷ 0.09290304 = 1,076.391 sq ft

The everyday shortcut: divide square feet by about 10.764 to get square meters. Since the foot-to-meter definition is exact, results are as precise as the number of decimals you keep.

When you need this

Real estate is the classic case: US and (partly) Canadian and UK listings quote square feet, while most of Europe, Asia and Latin America list homes in square meters. Comparing a 900 sq ft condo in Miami with an 85 m² flat in Berlin only works once both are in the same unit — here, the Berlin flat is slightly larger (85 m² ≈ 915 sq ft).
