How the conversion works

The acre is defined through the international yard, which makes it exactly 0.40468564224 hectares (4,046.856 m²). The conversion is a single multiplication or division:

  • acres → hectares: multiply by 0.404686 — 40 ac × 0.404686 = 16.187 ha
  • hectares → acres: divide by 0.404686 — 10 ha ÷ 0.404686 = 24.711 ac

The quick mental rule: acres × 0.4 ≈ hectares. It's accurate to about 1%, which is plenty for reading a property listing — use the converter when the contract needs exact figures.

Some anchors to picture the sizes:

  • 1 hectare = 10,000 m² = a 100 m × 100 m square = 2.471 acres
  • 1 acre = 4,047 m² — about 60% of a soccer pitch (a full pitch is ~0.7 ha)
  • 640 acres = 1 square mile = 259 hectares

How to use it

  1. Type a value into either field — acres or hectares.
  2. The other side converts live; results are trimmed to four decimals.
  3. Tap a common value chip (0.5, 1, 2, 5, 10, 40, 100 acres) to start from a typical parcel size.
  4. Copy puts the full conversion (e.g. 40 ac = 16.1874 ha) on your clipboard.

When you need this

Land sizes are where the imperial–metric split still bites hardest: a farm listing in Iowa is quoted in acres, an agricultural report from the EU in hectares, and a vineyard for sale in France in both. Real-estate browsing across countries, comparing farm yields per unit of land, reading forestry or wildfire reports, checking a plot in an inheritance document — all of it comes down to this one factor.

For building-scale areas, the SQFT to SQM Converter does the same job for square feet and square meters, and the Miles to KM Converter covers the distances between those parcels.

Private by design

The conversion runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded or tracked, and there's no sign-up. For area, length, weight and more in one place, try the general Unit Converter, or browse more free utilities on the all tools page.
