How the conversion works

The international mile is defined as exactly 1.609344 kilometers, so converting speeds is a single multiplication or division:

  • mph → km/h: multiply by 1.609344 — 60 mph × 1.609344 = 96.56 km/h
  • km/h → mph: divide by 1.609344 — 130 km/h ÷ 1.609344 = 80.78 mph

For quick mental math, multiply mph by 1.6 (or add 60% to the number). Going the other way, taking 60% of the km/h value gets you close: 100 km/h ≈ 62 mph.

How to use it

  1. Type a speed into either field — miles per hour or kilometers per hour.
  2. The other side converts live; results are trimmed to two decimals.
  3. Tap a common value chip (10, 30, 55, 60, 70, 100, 120 mph) to start from a typical speed limit.
  4. Copy puts the full conversion (e.g. 60 mph = 96.56 km/h) on your clipboard.

When you need this

The classic case is driving abroad: you rent a car in Europe with a km/h speedometer while your instincts run in mph — or the reverse on a US road trip. US limits like 55, 65 and 70 mph line up roughly with the metric world's 90, 105 and 115 km/h, while European limits of 50, 100 and 130 km/h translate to about 31, 62 and 81 mph. Beyond the road, treadmills often let you switch units (a 10 km/h jog is a 6.2 mph setting), and weather reports mix conventions too — a storm gusting at 75 mph is blowing at roughly 121 km/h.

For distances rather than speeds, the Miles to KM Converter uses the same exact factor. Sailors and pilots measuring wind will want the Knots to MPH Converter, and runners converting between speed and min/km or min/mile pace can use the Pace Calculator.
