How the conversion works

A knot is one nautical mile per hour, and the nautical mile is defined as exactly 1,852 meters. Dividing that by the statute mile (1,609.344 m) gives the conversion factor:

  • knots → mph: multiply by 1.15078 — 20 kn × 1.15078 = 23.02 mph
  • mph → knots: divide by 1.15078 — 74 mph ÷ 1.15078 = 64.30 kn

The factor is close to 1.15, so a quick mental shortcut is to add 15% to the knot value. A knot is also exactly 1.852 km/h, which makes the metric conversion even simpler.

The nautical mile isn't arbitrary: it was originally defined as one minute of latitude on the Earth's surface. That's why sailors and pilots still navigate in nautical miles and knots — distances read straight off the chart grid.

How to use it

  1. Type a speed into either field — knots or miles per hour.
  2. The other side converts live; results are trimmed to two decimals.
  3. Tap a common value chip (5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 50, 100 kn) to start from a typical wind or boat speed.
  4. Copy puts the full conversion (e.g. 20 kn = 23.02 mph) on your clipboard.

When you need this

Three worlds still speak knots: sailing and boating (hull speeds, wind forecasts, marina weather), aviation (airspeed, wind aloft, runway crosswind limits), and meteorology (marine forecasts and hurricane advisories quote sustained winds in knots, while TV news translates them to mph). If you're reading a forecast that says "gusts to 35 knots" and wondering whether to cancel the trip — that's about 40 mph, and this converter answers it in one keystroke.

For everyday road speeds, the MPH to KM/H Converter handles the metric side, and the Miles to KM Converter covers distances. For everything else — weight, volume, temperature — the general Unit Converter has you covered.
