How the conversion works

The US gallon is defined as exactly 231 cubic inches, which works out to 3.785412 liters per gallon (or 0.264172 gallons per liter):

• liters → US gallons: multiply by 0.264172 — 10 L × 0.264172 = 2.6417 gal
• US gallons → liters: multiply by 3.785412 — 5 gal × 3.785412 = 18.9271 L

Important: this tool converts to US gallons. The imperial (UK) gallon is a different, larger unit — exactly 4.54609 liters — so a British "gallon" holds about 20% more than an American one. Fuel economy figures and container sizes from the US always mean US gallons.
