How the conversion works

The foot is defined as exactly 12 inches, so the conversion is a single division or multiplication:

  • inches → feet: divide by 12 — 72 in ÷ 12 = 6 ft
  • feet → inches: multiply by 12 — 5 ft × 12 = 60 in

Because 12 is the exact definition, results are as precise as the number of decimals you keep. For everyday use you'll often want the remainder form instead of a decimal: take the whole feet, then multiply the leftover fraction by 12 to get the remaining inches — 65 in = 5 ft 5 in rather than 5.4167 ft.

How to use it

  1. Type a value into either field — inches or feet.
  2. The other side converts live; results are trimmed to four decimals.
  3. Tap a common value chip (6, 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72 in) to start from a typical measurement.
  4. Copy puts the full conversion (e.g. 65 in = 5.4167 ft) on your clipboard.

When you need this

Body height is the classic case: forms and medical charts sometimes want inches, but people say "five foot five" — 65 inches. TV and monitor listings quote diagonals in inches, while your wall space is easier to picture in feet. Lumber flips it around: boards are sold by the foot but trimmed by the inch, so an 8-foot two-by-four is 96 inches before your first cut. When the numbers cross into metric, the CM to Inches Converter and Feet to Meters Converter work exactly the same way, and the MM to Inches Converter covers the small stuff like screws and drill bits.

Private by design

The conversion runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded or tracked, and there's no sign-up. For weight, volume, temperature and more, try the general Unit Converter, or browse more free utilities on the all tools page.
