What this tool does

This tool enlarges an image 2× or 4× using a real super-resolution neural network — not the blurry stretch you get from a normal resize. Where classic resizing interpolates between existing pixels (and makes everything soft), the AI model predicts the detail that a larger version of the image would have: crisp edges, cleaner textures, less JPEG mush.

The unusual part is where it runs. Most AI upscalers upload your image to a GPU server, meter you with credits and watermark the free tier. Here the model itself — Real-ESRGAN, about 5 MB — is downloaded into your browser once, and the computation happens on your own device via WebGPU. Your image never leaves your machine, there is nothing to sign up for, and there is no per-image cost for anyone, which is why the tool can stay genuinely free.

What to expect (honestly)

AI upscaling is reconstruction, not restoration. The model has learned from millions of images what plausible detail looks like, and it applies that knowledge to yours. In practice:

• Photos gain the most — skin, foliage, fabric and architecture come out convincingly sharper, and JPEG compression artifacts largely disappear.
• Screenshots and UI images clean up well; text becomes smoother, though genuinely unreadable text stays unreadable.
• Artwork and logos get crisp edges, but for flat vector-style logos a true vector redraw will always beat any pixel upscaler.
• Tiny faces become sharper but not more accurate — the model invents plausible pixels, so don't treat the output as forensic evidence.

If the input is extremely degraded (heavily compressed, 50px thumbnails), the result will be better but not miraculous. Garbage in, nicer-looking garbage out.

How to use it

1. Drop an image onto the box above, or click it to pick a file (JPG, PNG or WebP).
2. Choose 2× or 4×. Four times is the model's native scale; 2× is rendered down from the 4× pass and looks extra clean.
3. Hit Upscale. The first run downloads the AI model once (~5 MB, then cached); after that the progress bar is pure computation on your device.
4. Compare the result in the zoomed side-by-side view — it shows the image center at 100% of the new size, where the difference is actually visible.
5. Download as JPG (smaller, ideal for photos) or PNG (lossless).

Large images are fitted to the processing limit first — upscaling is for images that are too small, and 4× of an already-huge photo would blow past what a browser tab can hold in memory.

Good to know

• WebGPU makes it fast. Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari run the model on your graphics chip; a 4× pass on a typical image takes seconds. On browsers without WebGPU the tool falls back to a slower CPU mode with a smaller size limit and says so.
• Transparency is flattened. The model works in RGB, so transparent PNG areas are composited onto white before upscaling. If you need a transparent result, upscale first and then run the AI Background Remover on the output.
• The model is cached. After the first download the browser keeps it, so later sessions start instantly and even work offline once the page is open.
